Abstract
The purpose of this lecture/discussion is to present information regarding the effect ADD/HD has on romantic relationships; validation of audience personal experience; interventions individuals and couples can make on their own behalf; importance of proper assessment; and to provide encouragement for individuals who desire improvement in the quality of their romantic relationship.
Audience participation will be encouraged so that the group can take advantage of each other's own experiences. The presenter will speak from both his clinical experience as well as his personal experience in how ADD/HD has affected his personal life and his romantic relationships.
Knowledge is a powerful healing tool for people who have ADD/HD. Just having information about what is taking place in the relationship and why it is happening is powerfully validating and helps move people out of isolation. That isolation, directly connected to shame, is a major hindrance to people who want and deserve a better relationship with their significant other. This lecture will present much of that information and will help move people out of shame and isolation through validation of their own experience.
Having validating information is valuable but by far is not all that is needed in healing the past and learning new ways to relate with each other. This lecture/discussion will place an emphasis on learning coping strategies and tools for improvement. At least 6 concrete tools and/or concepts will be presented that participants can take home with them and apply in their own relationships.
Medications and holistic approaches for treatment of ADD will be briefly discussed with an emphasis on proper assessment by a qualified professional. Appropriate assessment and treatment combined with interventions individuals can make on their own behalf have proven to be a winning combination for helping couples with ADD get off the roller coaster and into the tunnel of love.

Presentation Format: Lecture.

Objectives:    Statistically we know there is a large correlation between Chemical Dependency (CD) and Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD/H). The purpose of this lecture/discussion is to present information that will be beneficial to family members of individuals who are chemically dependent and who also have ADD/H.

Length Of Presentation:    1.5 hours is best for this amount of information plus audience participation, but it can be scaled down to 1 hour of pure didactic, if necessary or expanded to 2 hours to accommodate further audience participation.

Audience:    This presentation is designed for adults who either have ADD and Chemical Dependency problems or people in relationship with them. It is also beneficial for clinicians needing information about ADD, chemical dependency and family dynamics.

Audio Visual Equipment Required: Overhead Projector, PowerPoint and lapel microphone.

Abstract
Statistically we know there is a large correlation between Chemical Dependency (CD) and Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD/H). The purpose of this lecture/discussion is to present information that will be beneficial to family members of individuals who are chemically dependent and who also have ADD/H.
The presenter will speak from his clinical experience as part of the CD treatment team at Cedar Vista Hospital in which a family systems approach is taken in effecting treatment of the CD individual. Audience participation will be encouraged so that the group can take advantage of each other's own experiences.
Behavioral characteristics will be presented to identify CD and ADD/H behavioral patterns. Likewise, co-dependent behavioral characteristics will be presented to identify behavioral traits family members can watch for in themselves. The deleterious effects of co-dependent behavior upon the CD individual will be discussed and alternate coping strategies for family members will be presented. Support groups are available to families members dealing with CD and ADD/H. Information for contacting support groups will also be presented.
Chemical Dependency is a voracious dragon that can devour whole families. Although family members may not be able to keep the CD individual from using, there are interventions family members can make that will help ensure their own sanity. It is in this context that the CD individual has a better chance of discovering and maintaining sobriety for themselves.
Taming the dragon is a process that no longer needs to be faced alone. There is help and hope for a new day. This presentation will help participants find that hope.

Abstract
Statistically we know there is a large correlation between Chemical Dependency (CD) and Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD/H). It is now understood that addictive behavior is not limited to only chemical dependency. Addictive behavior can be acted out in a multitude of ways, including -- and most often -- codependency.
The World Health Organization has defined addiction as "a pathological relationship with a substance, person or experience which has life damaging consequences." The purpose of this lecture/discussion is to present information that will be beneficial to the individual who has found hyperfocusing on someone else and/or their behavior as a way to mood alter from their own painful reality.
The presenter will speak from his clinical experience in treating codependent individuals as part of the CD treatment team at Cedar Vista Hospital and in private practice. Audience participation will be encouraged so the group can share their own strength, hope and experience and in that process help bring individuals out of their shame and isolation which imprisons them.
Behavioral characteristics will be presented to identify both codependent and ADD/H behavioral patterns. The life damaging effects of codependent behavior will be discussed and alternate coping strategies will be presented. Support groups are available to individuals dealing with codependency and ADD/H. Abstract
ADD is a neurobiological disorder which is present in both children and adults. Believed to be passed-on genetically, ADD is often present in one or both parents of children who have ADD. Inattentiveness, distractibility and impulsiveness (hallmarks of ADD) have a huge effect on developmental processes, as well as the relationships in a family. This seminar will provide an interactive forum to present information about the characteristics of ADD in children and adults; how those behavioral traits affect individuals and family relationships; and valuable information / interventions people can make to better connect, communicate and celebrate life.

The presenter will speak from his clinical experience of what sex is like in relationship to ADD/H. Audience members will be encouraged to share their own perspectives of ADD and sexuality in order to increase understanding and decrease shame.
Three specific areas of ADD/sexual functioning will be addressed in this session: 1) the effects from difficulty sustaining attention and distractibility, 2) The effects of hyperfocus, and 3) The effects of medication upon performance. Also discussed will be the emotional impact in relationship to the above.

SESSION TITLE AND DESCRIPTION

Title: Sexuality In The ADD World

Description: The largest sexual organ in the human body is the brain for it is here that sexual interest, arousal, and pleasurable sensations are experienced and/or interpreted. If the brain is "wired" differently, it's going to have an affect on the way one experiences sexual intimacy. Likewise, it will not only affect the person who has ADD, but their partner, as well. In this open and frank discussion, we will look at the three most common challenges people with ADD encounter sexually and interventions they can make which will enhance their ability to enjoy sexual intimacy.

Abstract
The purpose of this lecture/discussion is to present information about ADD/HD and other metabolic problems in the brain which translate into behavioral problems. Recent research demonstrates the medical aspect of many psychiatric disorders and medical interventions which can make a major difference in the individual's progress towards wholeness. Utilizing SPECT imaging (a form of nuclear medicine) we have been able to better pinpoint which brain systems are involved in behavioral problems when the root of the problem is neurobiological first and secondly, dysfunctional. Understanding brain functioning in terms of neurobiology creates a whole new treatment paradigm where in we finally can treat the real problem(s) instead of treating the symptoms. Diagnostic processes are changing which affects the choices in treatment modalities. This new paradigm does not separate medicine and psychotherapy, but instead provides information for better integrating the two into more effective treatment for the patient.
This presentation will demonstrate through SPECT images of several different brain anomalies which correlate to specific behavioral patterns and characteristics. It will also present information about current medication interventions available through physicians and cognitive behavioral strategies for dealing with The Brain - The Will - The Challenge.

Length Of Presentation:    1.5 hours

Audio Visual Equipment Required: Overhead Projector, PowerPoint and lapel microphone.

Abstract
The Church is supposed to be a refuge for people with broken and shattered lives. Who more qualifies for sanctuary than the individual with ADD who silently suffers with the discouragement associated with ADD.
ADD drastically affects relationships -- including one's relationship with God. The following is a common sentiment of Christians with ADD: "Watch and pray? I can't even stay focused long enough to pray for help let alone pay attention long enough to watch God intervene. Just as I start praying about one thing, I get distracted by some other thought colliding in my head. I guess I'm not a very good Christian."
Clearly people with ADD need the grace Christ offers and the love, acceptance and structure the Church is Spiritually equipped to provide. This presentation will offer hope and help for a Church full of people affected either directly or indirectly by ADD.

Title Of Session: Anger · Rage · & Hope -- "The Brain-Rage Connection"

Presenter Information: Jonathan Scott Halverstadt, M.S. is author of the book "ADD & Romance -- Finding Fulfillment In Love, Sex and Relationships," and founder of the Halverstadt Group - a private psychotherapy practice in Northern California.

Presentation Format: Lecture.

Objectives: The audience will learn through case histories and slides of S.P.E.C.T. imaging about the connection between rage, violence and brain functioning. The audience will also learn about new interventions and treatment for people who rage-- treatment which offers a lot of hope instead of more guilt and shame.

Length Of Presentation:    1.5 hours seminar / 7 hour workshop

Audio Visual Equipment Required: Overhead Projector, PowerPoint and lapel microphone.

Abstract
Decades have come and gone with relatively little change in the information presented to clinicians regarding diagnostics and effective treatment interventions for perpetrators of anger and rage. Although there are many treatment programs for people who rage, most rely only on cognitive/behavioral interventions. Most often, anger and rage have a root etiology involving a medical problem. Even when "ragers" are able to control their impulses, they continue to have intrapsychic pain because the treatment plan only addressed the symptoms – not the problem(s) or the genesis of the anger/rage behind the symptoms.

This cutting edge workshop will provide participants with the most recent advances in the diagnosis and treatment of anger and rage, beginning with a review of their different forms and their etiology – psychological, psychiatric and medical. The primary focus will be on the specific brain systems involved and how each – individually or in combination – can create specific styles of anger and rage. Mr. Halverstadt will present, through slides of brain scans (SPECT* studies) and case histories, the metabolic components of anger and rage and current medical treatment of these brain systems. If one’s brain is not working correctly, the individual feels uncomfortable in his body, resulting in increased stress and therefore an increased likelihood of rage. Once the brain systems are brought back to a more normalized level of performance, the cognitive/behavioral interventions quickly become more effective. When the brain works as it should, then the interventions work as they should.

Anger and rage can be very complex reactions to a number of stimuli – psychological, psychosocial, psychiatric and medical. If the clinician is not aware of the interplay between these complexities, it can lead to misdiagnosis and consequently mistreatment. By approaching anger and rage from an integrated multidisciplinary model, diagnosis becomes more accurate, treatment becomes more effective and patients become more successful controlling their rage. As an additional benefit to treatment, the patient may feel comfortable in his own skin for the first time, making it easier to control their rage.

*SPECT, (Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography) is a form of nuclear medicine which studies blood flow.

Title: Anger · Rage · & Hope -- "The Brain-Rage Connection"

Description:     Know someone who is more angry than most? Someone who rages and has destructive/aggressive tendencies? On the one hand can be gentle and loving one minute and rage the next? It may be that there is more involved in causing these problems than just their personality. New research shows certain anomalies in the brain may be causing a lot of these problems -- and also shows new hope for helping people to change. By attending this session, you'll walk away with a different perspective of anger ... and with renewed hope for change.
